The SDGs-EYES project participated in the recent GEO Forum in Rome, contributing to discussions on how Earth Observation (EO) can be effectively leveraged to advance the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Throughout the forum, and particularly at the EuroGEO booth – hosted in collaboration with the European Research Executive Agency (REA) and the European Health and Digital Executive Agency (HaDEA) – SDGs-EYES demonstrated how EO solutions, when co-designed with end users and focused on real-world application, can serve as a critical bridge between global objectives and local action.
During the session “Earth Observation for Climate Action: Supporting Innovative Projects”, co-organized by the Space for Climate Observatory, the European Association of Remote Sensing Companies (EARSC), and the African Smart Cities Innovation Foundation (ASCIF), SDGs-EYES presented the pilot 2 on extreme temperatures risk as successful case study for EO implementation. The session gathered experts and stakeholders to explore how EO technologies support climate adaptation strategies for regional and local authorities. In particular, our contributions emphasized that EO tools – combined with socio-economic and health data – can meaningfully contribute to risk assessment, climate resilience, and land use planning, while remaining aligned with key policy frameworks.
At the Open Data & Open Knowledge (ODOK) Workshop, SDGs-EYES highlighted its Pilot 5, which focuses on climate security embedded into the discussion around Energizing EO Capacity Building on Flood and Drought Management” and supported the ongoing dialogue on operational EO services for early warning systems, and context-specific risk management strategies.
Additionally, throughout the week, SDGs-EYES maintained a presence at the EuroGEO booth with a dedicated poster and video presentation. On May 8th, the project was featured during the spotlight session “Enhancing Copernicus Services for SDGs Monitoring.” This provided an opportunity to delve into the project’s methodologies and results.
