On 27 March, experts and stakeholders will gather at the Transilvania University Rectorate in Brașov for a workshop titled “European Biodiversity Strategy 2030: Impact on Forest Management and Investments.”

Organized by the Academy of Agricultural and Forestry Sciences (Academia de Ştiinţe Agricole şi Silvice “Gheorghe Ionescu-Şişeşti”), Transilvania University of Brașov (Universitatea Transilvania din Brașov), and the National Research and Development Institute for Forestry (Institutul Național de Cercetare și Dezvoltare în Silvicultură), the event will explore how the EU Biodiversity Strategy plans to designate approximately 10% of Romania’s land as strictly protected by 2030. This measure aims to preserve biodiversity, conserve genetic resources, and safeguard essential ecological processes.

A key highlight will be the SDGs-EYES Pilot “Forest Cover and Erosion – Romania” presentation, which will demonstrate our web-based Graphical User Interface designed to visualize changes in forest cover and provide geospatial support to identify their causes. This tool will provide a practical example of advanced monitoring techniques in high conservation value forests.

The workshop will also discuss methodologies for mapping and monitoring ecologically valuable forests, drawing on insights from the ForestPaths project alongside other European initiatives. ForestPaths has demonstrated effective approaches for assessing forest conservation value, complementing the SDGs-EYES Pilot case study.

Structured into three sessions, the debate will first address the strategic context and challenges posed by the EU Biodiversity Strategy, then examine the economic and technical impacts on forest management and infrastructure, and finally explore future opportunities. These include compensation mechanisms for affected forest owners and various funding options available at both EU and national levels.
